Cyberpunk 2077 mod introduces GTA 5-style multiplayer…

Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mod, primarily experienced through the community-developed CyberMP mod, is slowly taking shape, allowing us to explore Night City together while CD Projekt Red works on an official release.

Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer has been a subject of speculation and anticipation since the game’s initial launch. Although the single player game did not initially include a multiplayer optionCD Projekt Red always had long-term plans for this feature. Now the multiplayer experience is starting to take shape, albeit through mods and community efforts rather than an official release.

The Current State of Multiplayer

Currently, the most common way to experience multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077 is through a mod called CyberMP.developed by a single person. This mod allows players to Explore Night City with up to 20 friendsAlthough it is still in early development and has its fair share of bugs and limitations, the mod lets you team up with friends to roam the city, engage in gunfights, and cause mayhem, giving a taste of what a fully developed multiplayer mode could look like.

The developer behind CyberMP recently invited YouTuber JuiceHead and others to test out its multiplayer version of Cyberpunk 2077, and it worked. While it lacks proper animations and quests, the mod allows players to roam the open world together, engaging in gunfights, and racing through Night City.

This minimalist take on a full-on Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mode is a far cry from official contemporaries like Grand Theft Auto Online, but it could lay the foundation for such a system. JuiceHead noted “no issues with lag or player teleportation” and, even in a 15-player deathmatch, “synchronization was near perfect.”

The mod doesn’t have proper player animations yet, as Cyberpunk 2077 was designed as a first-person single-player game. Developer CD Projekt Red had no reason to make the player look good in third-person. The mod is still in active developmentso there is a chance that this will be added before its full release. The developer has made it clear that it will not have quest support, so it won’t be as involved as a full GTA Online style mode.

However, it does have mod support itself, so there’s always a chance that other members of the community will work on additional features after its release. It doesn’t have a launch date yet, but even this basic version seems to be working quite well, so a full release might not be too far away.

Official Multiplayer Plans

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that an official multiplayer mode is in the works, but details remain scarce. Speculation suggests that it will likely take place in the same sprawling Night City environment as the single-player game, retaining the first-person perspective players are accustomed to. There are many possibilities for how this mode will play out, from free-form multiplayer like GTA Online to mission-based zones similar to Destiny. However, the details of these plans are still under wraps and fans have to speculate and wait for more concrete information.

Cyberpunk 2077 players have been eagerly awaiting a multiplayer mode ever since CD Projekt announced it, But the game’s infamous launch led to its cancellation, with work focused on fixing the base game. It’s not out of the question that this will be the case for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel currently in development at CD Projekt, so players can have some hope for some official multiplayer shenanigans in the future.

In the meantime, players looking to experience Night City with friends can check out the CyberMP mod and follow its progress on platforms like YouTube, where the developer regularly posts updates and test footage.

For now, while the streets of Night City may seem a little less lonely with these early multiplayer efforts, the full-fledged official multiplayer experience remains one of the most anticipated features for Cyberpunk 2077 fans. Stay tuned for more updates as CD Projekt Red continues to develop this ambitious addition to the game.
