Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – a wealth of information about the game

Ubisoft has unveiled the previously hidden cards about the eleventh main installment of the Assassin’s Creed series. After the debut trailer and a handful of first details about the gameplay and story, as well as announcements of the gameplay presentation the time has come for a lot of detailed information about what we will find in this project.

Before we go over them, let’s remind you that Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is aimed at PC and current and next generation consoles and will debut at the end of this year. Interestingly, thanks to the Smart Delivery option, Xbox One users will receive a free version for the Xbox X Series and vice versa. In Poland, the game will get a cinematic location.

A short history lesson

“We really come in peace …”

Valhalla, meaning …?

The authors do not want to go into detail about the meaning of the game subtitle. However, they admit that going to Valhalla after death, the place where the glorious Viking warriors end up, is very important for the main character for obvious reasons. Over time, this is expected to lead to difficult choices between his ambitions and the needs of his clan.

At the end of the 9th century AD Scandinavia was becoming less and less friendly to its inhabitants. The necessary resources were lacking, and to make matters worse, the land was plunged into constant wars. No wonder then that after perfecting the art of building ships and boats, the peoples inhabiting it began to venture further and further in search of lands on which they could settle. Such was the fate of the clan we will lead in AC: Valhalla. The action of this production will start in 873 in Norway, where Eivor comes from (which we should read as A-vor), i.e. the main character (or heroine, because the game will allow us to choose whether we want to take control of a warrior or a fighter), and his warriors. The creators argue that players will be able to “feel the harshness of this land and political pressure” and, consequently, “understand why they have to move to England, where most of the game is played”.

Almost like The Settlers

“The village is calm, the village is cheerful! Which voice of your glory can do? “

Authors Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla they will try to deal with the myth of the Vikings as purely ruthless barbarians immersed in a killing frenzy. Yes, they were hardened warriors, although they also developed an extremely rich culture and extensive mythology, and were also excellent settlers. People who at the moment are afraid of “inflection” in the other direction, and thus making them good, and the people of England – bad – can, however, sleep peacefully. In this production, not all Vikings will arouse sympathy, just like King Alfred of Wessex (later known as Alfred the Great) will not be a typical antagonistbut a multidimensional and important historical figure that the creators want to treat with due respect.

Since we’ve already mentioned settlement, it’s worth taking this topic further. IN AC: Valhalla we will have to build a settlement belonging to our clan from scratch, and then systematically expand it. Within it, we will not only construct new buildings, such as barracks, a forge or a tattoo artist’s workshop, but also improve existing buildings. While the title won’t suddenly turn into a strategy game, the creators’ ambition is to make players feel at home in their village … or at least give it the role that Normandy played in the first three installments of the Mass Effect series. The settlement will therefore be our base, as well as a place where many of our adventures will begin and end, and a lot of decisions will be made. Suffice it to say that while playing, we will establish alliances with other clans, which will often be sealed by weddings taking place in our village.

The trip, during which not even one head can fly, cannot be considered successful.

The authors promise that the game world will be filled with “interesting things”, and discovering them is to be a real reward for us. In England, divided into four kingdoms (Wessex, Northumbria, Mercia and East England), we find three great cities, i.e. London, Winchester and Jórvík (York). In addition, there are to be numerous surprises on the map.

However, we will not only be driven to explore by curiosity or mission goals, but also by the need to obtain resources and expand our sphere of influence, and thus – military operations. In addition to the raids that we will go on board with other Vikings, the game will feature assaults, i.e. battles on a much larger scale, involving attacks on large fortifications. Interestingly, the Vikings who join us during the game will be able to be made available to other players as mercenaries (providing us with a share of the loot); nothing will prevent us from making use of the warriors belonging to our friends. In the game, however, we will not find the cooperation mode that has been gossiped about in the past.

This brings us to the next important element of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, the combat system. This one is supposed to be more brutal than ever, and cutting off limbs or decapitations will be the order of the day here. In addition, Eivor will fight with two weapons at the same time, regardless of whether they are swords, axes or … shields that will be used for both defense and attack. According to Thierry Noël, the historian overseeing the described project, the creators made efforts to make the fight in this production as diverse as possible, because it was also in reality. Our opponents are also to be diversified (the most in the history of the series).

We will also shed the blood of the enemies silently, using the hidden blade, which at some point will be in the hero’s possession. It is true that the authors have not yet explained why it is located on the outside of his forearm, but it can be assumed that this is perhaps a way for him to keep all his fingers. As you can read on the Reddit forum, one of the Slovak stores wrote that the game will implement a masking mechanic in snow or mud, straight from Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. There will also be a bow at your disposal, which will allow you to eliminate enemies from a safe distance.

Over time, Eivor will become more and more powerful, which will be reflected in the appearance of his equipment (image source: Game Informer).

AC: Valhalla will feature character development. Ashraf Ismail, the creative director of the project, argues that his team wanted to provide a breath of fresh air on this topic. First We will increase Eivor’s combat potential by acquiring new equipment and improving existing items with runes. However, the system developed by the authors will be so flexible that nothing will prevent you from completing the game with the weapon with which we start our adventure, because each piece of equipment is to be unique and susceptible to modifications that will allow you to adjust it to your individual preferences. The second way to make the hero more powerful will be acquiring new skills and improving those already learned. The creators will allow us to freely choose among them those that best suit our style of play. At the same time, the authors distance themselves from the concept of a “skill tree”, at least in terms of the functionality of the system they developed, mainly due to the synergy between individual abilities.

Splashing in the water

From the Viking diary: “The weather is not good, but the views are still wonderful.”

As Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is a game about Vikings, shipping is an essential feature. However, we will not experience sea battles straight from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey or Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The ship will serve us as a fast means of transport; it will also allow us to evacuate quicklywhen the raid situation gets out of hand. As was the case in the earlier parts of the series, it will be susceptible to modifications.

Mythology and modern times

A Viking with a torch looks at a wooden temple – this night will certainly not be peaceful.

As mythology played an important role in the life of the Vikings, it will also be one of the pillars of the story of AC: Valhalla. It is true that the creators do not say it directly, however it can be assumed that their assurances about “a nice way to integrate it” with the series universe mean the approach known from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Anyway, we could see a small foretaste of this in the trailer, in which the hooded Odin appears after a while turning into a raven. Another thing is that it is this bird that will play a similar role to the eagle from the previous part of the series (read: a specific drone or the main character’s “eyes” hovering in the skies).

The Hidden (Assassins) and the Order of the Ancients (Templars) will also play an important role in the game. In addition, we will get to know the rest of the story about the modern heroine of the series, i.e. Layla, as well as learn more about the First Civilization.

Less serious things

“Diplomacy is important, and so are wars and the struggle to survive, but sometimes you have to tear yourself apart. So I invite you to a little party. ”

Finally, it should be noted that Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla will also feature side activities that will provide us with a springboard from the hardships of the warrior. The game will include, among other things, hunting, drinking competitions, as well as “traditional Viking pyskówki”during which we will be throwing insults at the opponent.
