Breaking myths: How to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch simply and safely

I have written several posts on this topic, but the information never hurts. In this guide I will clarify certain general doubts, confusing points regarding jailbreaking (liberation) and most importantly, I will teach you how to install excellent applications on your iPhones or iPods Touch, in the simplest way you have ever seen, overcoming the limitations imposed by Apple , but without running the risk of losing the warranty of your devices (iPhone / iTouch) and above all free. The guide will be explained for both Mac and Windows users.

What is the Jailbreak?

Before starting the release or jailbreaking process, it is necessary to define what this process consists of.

Jailbreak or release an iPhone / iPod Touch is extremely simple and safe process, which allows you to install additional applications to those available in the Apple application store (App Store). For different reasons: convenience, competitiveness, mere whim … there are thousands of applications that Apple does not allow in the App Store. The vast majority of these applications are free and you can install them on your device just by releasing it. As for the security of the jailbreaking process, you have nothing to worry about, you can always use iTunes to return your iPhone or iPod Touch to its factory settings, leaving your device as if you had never jailbreaked.

Another point of great importance is to make clear once and for all the differences between jailbreak and unlock. The terms should never be confused. Unlocking an iPhone is a slightly more complex process that allows you to use your phone outside of the official operator that sells you the iPhone. With jailbreaking you can only install additional applications to those available in the App Store. You will be able to do everything you did before releasing it and more

Why should you unlock your iPhone or iPod Touch?

Well, why can you install applications that Apple does not allow in the iTunes App Store, and it is worth saying that these applications take your device (iPod or iPhone) to unimaginable levels. For example, these are some of the things you can do with a jailbroken iPhone:

  • Use your iPhone as a 3G modem for your laptop.
  • Record video using Cycorder.
  • Unlock your iPhone by installing a simple program, so you can use a prepaid card when you go on vacation instead of paying high roaming fees.
  • Follow directions for directions spoken in a GPS program while driving.
  • Copy and Paste (yes, copy and paste).
  • Play NES games and other emulated classics.

Note: Before here it must be said that although the jailbreaking process is a failsafe method, if you decide to do it you do so at your own risk and we are not responsible for any failure that may occur for any unforeseen reason. Also, if you plan to unlock your iPhone soon, then Do not follow these instructions or you won’t be able to unlock it. If you are looking to unlock your iPhone, read the other guides about it.

Once this is cleared, we will proceed to release our iPhones / iPods Touch. I will explain the process for both Mac and Windows users.

Opening the back door (Mac users only)

The first thing you need to do to install free applications on your iPhone or iPod is put it in DFU mode, or device firmware update mode. Do not worry, this is nothing strange: It is the way your device gets every time you update the operating system on it. With this step, you will be taking your iPhone to that state.

This is the only long part of this tutorial, since the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update, Apple has made it difficult to connect a Mac with an iPhone / iPod manually placed in DFU Mode. This can be solved by replacing some USB drivers from an older version of Mac OS X. If you have 10.5.6 installed, follow these instructions:

Step 1. To do this, you need to get a free Apple Developer Connection account. Since you are using iTunes with your device, you are almost done: you just have to sign in with your Apple ID from here. The form will ask you to answer a couple of questions (just answer what you want), and you’ll be done as soon as you click the button To accept.

Step 2. Now you have to download and install the drivers. Go to this page and find the file:

IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg for Mac OS X10.5.5 Build 9F33

Once downloaded, unplug all Apple USB peripherals except for your Apple keyboard and mouse then install the package included in the disk image.

Once it restarts after installation, you are ready to run QuickPwn, the program that will allow you to install the applications.

Important: After the jailbreaking process is finished, you have to restore the previous USB drivers. Return to this page and download IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55, then repeat the same operation. Once it restarts, Mac OS X 10.5.6 will be restored to its original state. (Don’t do it yet, we’ll remind you at the end).

Unlocking iPhone or iPod Touch (For all users)

I’m pleased to tell you that if you’ve made it this far, then you’ve passed the “hard” part, now comes the easy part. It all comes down to running QuickPwn. QuickPwn is a program that easily “jailbreaks” your iPhone or iPod Touch. Unlocking, as the name implies, just means breaking Apple’s limitations to access your device, allowing you to put whatever you want on it. That is, you can install any application you want, and not just those that Apple allows you to install.

Step 1. Download QuickPwn for Mac OS X or for Windows according to your needs from any of the following links:

Windows:

QuickPwn 2.2.5 for Windows: You can get the official version via Torrent here.

If you have no idea what a torrent is, then better download one of the following.

  • http://miphone.ca/iphone-dev/QuickPwn_2.2.5.dmg

Step 2. Run QuickPwn and choose the type of device you have: iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPod Touch.

Step 3. Follow the instructions on the screen. QuickPwn is fully automatic:

  • First of all, you will download all the necessary Apple components on your own.
  • The software will then build a custom iPhone operating system, which includes Installer and Cydia, the two programs that will allow you to install iPhone / iTouch applications outside of the iTunes App Store.
  • When QuickPwn asks you to enter your system password, please do so. It is not malicious. Only a requirement to function.
  • Finally, follow the instructions on the screen precisely (verbatim) to put the device in DFU mode (Device Firmware ORpdate). QuickPwn will do the rest.

If for whatever reason something doesn’t work, don’t worry. Start the process again. If the device resists, restore it to factory default settings with iTunes, and return to the starting point, there will be no damage.

Step 4. Be patient while your iPhone or iPod Touch reboots. Once it has rebooted, you are done unlocking your iPhone.

Important: Once the jailbreaking process is finished, you have to restore the USB drivers that you had initially (Remember?). Come back to this page and download IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55, then repeat the same operation. Once it restarts, Mac OS X 10.5.6 will be restored to its original state.

Installing the applications

If you have managed to get here you are a champion. You passed the difficult part, the easy part and now only the fun part remains.

If you look closely you will notice that there are two new icons on the application screen of the iPhone or iPod Touch: One says “Installer” and the other says “Cydia”. These are the two systems for installing software. It doesn’t really matter which one you use to install your software. Most applications can be installed from both (there are exceptions, such as xGPS, which can only be installed in Cydia) and both allow you to search for and install software from a wide variety of sources.

* Browse catalogs. Whichever system you choose, installing applications is as easy as going through the available catalogs and choosing the application you want.

* Manually add applications. There will be times when you will discover applications on the web that are not by default in the Cydia or Installer catalog. Fortunately, you can add these just by entering the URL provided by the developer on the web page, a process known as “Add a source”. Here’s how to do it:

In Cydia

  • Click “Manage”.
  • Click on “Sources”.
  • Click “Edit” and then “Add”.
  • Enter the address in the dialog field.
  • Click “Add Source”.

In Installer

  • Click on “Sources”.
  • Click “Edit” and then “Add”.
  • Enter the address in the dialog field.
  • Click “Done” and return to the sources by clicking “Sources.”

And that was it. Now you have your iPhone or iPod Touch jailbroken and you can install any application you like using any of the programs. Don’t forget to let us know how it went through the comments and have fun.
