Everything you need to know about the Sony PS5

While PlayStation 5 development has likely been going on for years, Sony has officially confirmed that it is in the works and is on the way this year. It is expected to launch the 2020 holiday alongside the Xbox Series X, costs upwards of $ 450 or $ 500, and should be fully revealed sometime soon during the summer. Here’s everything we know about the Sony PS5 up to now.

What will Sony’s PS5 design look like?

The devkit layout it looks like the Roman numeral for 5, but the odds are that the final product that is shipped to consumers will look very different. At the very least, don’t expect something like the big box that is the Xbox Series X.

When will the PS5 be revealed?

Sony was expected to hold an event on June 4 to showcase and present some of the games we would see launch on PlayStation 5. It was speculated that during this time the company too would reveal the design of the PS5.

Due to ongoing protests in the United States surrounding the murder of George Floyd and police brutality, this event was postponed to an unspecified date.

What will Sony’s PS5 cost?

We don’t know the cost for sure, but reports have indicated that Sony is struggling to keep the price low. Apparently the PS5 is $ 450 right now (unknown if this includes packaging and shipping) due to a shortage of supplies and a cooling system that is more expensive than usual. There is reportedly some debate within Sony as to whether the PS5 should be sold at a loss or not.

Others have speculated, and Sony itself has even indicated, that the company is waiting to see what the Xbox Series X will cost Microsoft before committing to a price tag for the PlayStation 5.

GPU PS5

The GPU, which is a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, which is a huge win for Sony. Ray tracing is a rendering technique that models how light travels and interacts with virtual objects. Wired notes that this is something Hollywood employs in big-budget movies, but it hasn’t made its way to any video game console yet (though it’s becoming more common with PC games).

Ray Tracing PS5

To clarify whether or not ray tracing would be achieved at the software level or through built-in hardware integration, Sony confirmed the latter. “There is an acceleration of ray tracing in the GPU hardware”He said, “which I think is the statement that people were looking for.”

However, ray tracing doesn’t just provide visual benefits, according to PlayStation. “If you want to test to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if enemies can hear the player’s footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that,” he said. “It’s the same as taking lightning through the environment.”

Solid State Drive PS5

The crème de la crème is that the PS5 will come with a solid state drive (SSD) instead of a hard disk drive (HDD). SSDs are historically more powerful, faster, and offer a much better gaming experience. Sony showed that what took 15 seconds to fast travel in Spider-Man on PS4 took just 0.8 seconds in a next-gen devkit. Even will support 8K graphicsAlthough most people will probably have televisions that only offer up to 4K resolution.

Because more simplified game data can be obtained by using an SSD, the way game downloads work will be different from the PlayStation 4. On the PS5, downloads will be more configurable and the parts even removable. “Instead of treating games as one big block of data,” said PlayStation, “we are allowing more precise access to data.”

This means that players can choose to download part of a game for single player or multiplayer, depending on what they want to play, or they can download the whole game and remove a part, like the single player.

Is PS5 backward compatible

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has stated that the PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible. Ryan even got to see that the company plans to offer an intergenerational game, where players can start a game on PS4, pick up where they left off on PS5, and return to PS4 if they wish.

“Whether it’s backward compatibility or the possibility of cross-generational play, we will be able to transition that community to the next generation,” Ryan said. “It won’t be a binary choice if you have to be on PlayStation 4 or the next generation to continue your friendship.”

In a post by BlogSony clarified that it believes that “the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.”

What is the new PS5 DualSense controller?

The next-gen PlayStation controller is officially called DualSense. Sony revealed its design in a blog post. It has haptic feedback technology, adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone array, and a new Create button to replace the Share button.

We show you what the PS5 looks like on the inside

To that end, there are two key innovations with the new PlayStation 5 controller. First, we are embracing haptic feedback to replace the “booming” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you really feel a wider range of feedback, so hitting a wall in a race car feels a lot different than making a soccer field tackle. You can even get a feel for a variety of textures when running through grassy fields or getting through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive activators, which have been incorporated into the activation buttons (L2 / R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers to give you the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or speeding an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions.

Will Sony’s PS5 support virtual reality?

Although you shouldn’t expect a new VR headset to be released alongside the PlayStation 5, Sony has big plans for virtual reality in the future. Sony’s Director of R&D for PlayStation, Dominic Mallinson, wants you to the next headset is lighter, easier to fit, and has fewer cables. A fully wireless headset is difficult to put on the market right now because it would be more expensive for consumers, but you think that’s the market trend.

Mallinson is excited about the possibilities of eye tracking, and stated that he expects the resolution to nearly double in future VR headsets, with an FOV increased to more than 120 degrees.

The architect of the PlayStation system, Mark Cerny, also said: “Virtual reality is very important to us and that current PSVR headsets are compatible with the new console.”

Sony has patented a new wireless VR headsetHowever, you shouldn’t expect this headset at launch alongside the PlayStation 5.

What will the user interface of Sony’s PS5 look like?

The user interface on PlayStation 4 is fast and works well, but it is also static and cannot provide much information. The PS5 is set to change this.

“Although it will be pretty quick to start games, we don’t want the player to have to start the game, see what happens, start the game, see what happens,” said PlayStation. “The multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of activities that can be linked in real time. Single player games will provide information such as what missions you could do and what rewards you could receive for completing them, and all of those options will be visible in the user interface. As a player, you jump straight to whatever you want.
