- The Gamers Nexus YouTube channel has published a video in which it compares the 6-year-old GTX 970 graphics card to new designs, testing it in games.
How does the owner of the GeForce GTX 970 feel in 2021 (of course I don’t mean the situation where the card is in a drawer)? One of the “hardware” Youtubers decided to check it out. The Gamers Nexus channel tested the 6-year-old graphics chip for usability in today’s games running at higher resolutions. It turned out that the GTX 970 allows you to play even titles created many years after its premiere. But under certain conditions – 1080p resolution and high details not always set.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 is a graphic layout that premiered in 2014. It was made in 28nm lithography, the GPU clock is 1050 MHz (1178 MHz in boost mode), it has 1664 shaders, 4 GB GDDR5 memory and a 256-bit bus. Although he is already 6 years old, the set with which he was tested looks quite modern (approximate prices as at the date of publication of the news, include VAT):
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus XII Hero – price about PLN 2400
- CPU: Intel Core i7 10070K (5.1 Ghz) – price about 1700 PLN
- RAM: 32 GB 3200 MHz – price about PLN 800
- Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA T2 1600 W – price about PLN 2,000
It should be borne in mind that a person who still owns the GTX, the rest of the components may also not be fresh. The performance results in her case will be worse than those presented here. Anyway, it is mentioned at the end when Stephen Burke from Gamers Nexus advises changing the graphics card. It won’t be too much of a discovery when I say that newer games prefer newer devices. This is especially true of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and GTA V. On the latest cards, the performance difference between these games is small, while on the GTX 970 the Rockstar title works much better than the adventures of Lara Croft. It could be a matter of optimizing the game, or else limitations of her engine, because on such an RTX 3080 it exceeds 180 FPS.
1080p is fine
Shadow of the Tomb Raider running with high details in 1080p resolution maintains an average of 53 frames / s, which may be a result quite sufficient to play (this is not CS: GO gentlemen …). GTA V as a title already on sale on the day of the premiere, the GTX 970 obviously works much faster, in over 80 fps. The latest, powerful graphics systems RTX 3080 and RX 6800 (let me remind you that in their time the GTX 970 was also a high-end card), of course, achieve very high values of about 180 fps. In the case of GTA V, they are slightly lower. In Horizon Zero Dawn, the game also did quite well, but in the case of Red Dead Redemption 2 frame rate dropped to 40 per second. Unfortunately, with the GTX 970 in the computer, we will not comfortably play Cyberpunk 2077 in high details. It remains to reduce them, or wait for patches to improve optimization.

There may be problems with 1440p
It is immediately noticeable in the screenshots below that Shadow of the Tomb Raider running in 1440p mode almost clogged the GTX 970. The frame rate dropped to 36 per second. This is a value considered rather “unplayable” by most PC players. Perhaps, however, lowering the details could achieve better results. IN GTA V you can play in this resolution without any problems, the performance of the old card allows it. Rendering in 1440p did not impress with the Ampere generation Nvidia cards. Similarly with the Radeon RX 6000 – the results oscillate around 180 fps. Horizon Zero Dawn in this case ran at 38 fps. Is that enough? It depends on the player’s preferences. Better not to mention Red Dead Redemption 2.

And the 4K resolution?
Geforce GTX 970 is not a card prepared for high resolutions. Both GTA Vand even more so, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was not playable in this mode. Anyway, basically none of the games in the test worked well in 4K and high details on the GTX 970. So who is this Nvidia chip from the Maxwell generation still a good choice for?
For someone who has a 1080p screen, they don’t need a bigger one, and they don’t always have to set ultra-level details. Or for the owner of a 1440p monitor who doesn’t hurt to play at medium or lower image settings. Provided that the rest of his computer’s components are relatively “modern” and efficient. In this case, the GTX 970 will allow you to play newer games.
In other cases, you should consider upgrading and here Gamers Nexus recommends slightly newer systems – GTX 1080 or RTX 2000 cards. Of course, you can also choose the latest devices. Given the possible age of the computer in which the GTX 970 sits, the rather lower RTX 3060 or RX 6700 models are recommended. Unless, of course, we manage to buy them, and this is not easy at present.
