Today, Facebook announced a new Security Check feature for Instagram app which will walk you through some necessary steps to take if your account has been compromised. Some of the steps include verifying login activity and updating your contact information. Like which? Like your phone number or alternate email address.
There seems to be an increase in the number of compromised accounts, which is just one of the reasons Instagram finally rolled out this feature. In addition to providing the Security Verification, Instagram has also detailed a few different steps that you can take. So that? To avoid worrying about your account being hacked.
Surprisingly, the two-factor authentication settings are not included in Instagram’s Security Check feature. However, the company “strongly” recommends enabling the feature if you don’t already have it. 2FA can provide an additional layer of defense instead of relying solely on your password to keep your account safe.
To accompany this, Instagram will also implement the ability to use WhatsApp as one of the security methods by enabling two-factor authentication, in addition to your cell phone number or apps like Google Authenticator. This integration makes perfect sense, given that Facebook owns both WhatsApp and Instagram. And when the feature is available for your account, you can receive a code on your WhatsApp number.
While it’s great to see Instagram go out of its way to help keep your account safe, it would be nice if a message pops up every now and then. That way, you might be reminded every three months or so to double-check your account information; also that you update your password using one of the best password managers.
