WhatsApp shopping cart, a new function to purchase products

Last month, Facebook added a buy button dedicated to WhatsApp. It’s a simple feature that allows you to browse a store’s catalog and then, if you come across something interesting, start a conversation that will presumably lead to a transaction. While it was helpful, it didn’t have a traditional checkout flow. Facebook is rectifying that somewhat with a new feature: the WhatsApp shopping cart.

Now, you can browse a catalog and add multiple items. When you’re done, your selections will be shared as a single item (a bit like when you send multiple photos to someone) in your conversation with the company. In theory, these groupings should make it easier for merchants to accept and track orders.

It is a small step towards a traditional payment experience. However, for now, there does not appear to be a formal process for providing payment and shipping details. Nevertheless, WhatsApp is slowly rolling out in-app payments, which could solve the problem.

In June, the company launched the feature in Brazil. However, a week later, the country’s central bank ordered to suspend the service, which wanted to “preserve a suitable competitive environment.” Since then, WhatsApp has brought payments to India, supported by five banks, including Jio Payments Bank. The latter is funded by Reliance Industries, a company that also owns Jio Platforms, a business in which Facebook and Google have invested.

The company points out that it is “an excellent tool for communicating with companies that tend to sell several items at the same time, such as local restaurants or clothing stores,” as stated in their official blog. The new feature will also allow companies to track order inquiries, manage customer requests and finalize sales.

The new feature will also allow companies to make a follow up on order inquiries, manage customer requests and make sales.
