Facebook is losing users in the US but earning like crazy

  • Every day, websites controlled by Facebook are used by over 2.5 billion people.
  • The number of active users has already exceeded 3.2 billion.
  • Despite boycott campaigns and growing controversy, Facebook made 29% more than a year ago.

Facebook has announced a financial report for the third quarter of 2020. It might seem that it is difficult to find boring news, but the rate at which the website’s profits grow is impressive. Facebook posted a net profit (i.e. after deduction of all costs and taxes) at the level of 7.85 billion dollars, i.e. higher by as much as 29% than in the same period a year ago. Among other things, the deduction of research and development costs helped, thanks to which the service paid only … 4% of the tax.

To better illustrate the scale of Facebook, it is worth comparing it with countries. Last year, Marek Zuckerberg’s website earned nearly $ 70 billion (revenue), which is more than Bulgaria’s GDP in 2018 ($ 65.13 billion), but still much less than Poland’s GDP ($ 585.7 billion in 2018).

The number of users is also growing. In the case of websites and applications, it is important how many people use them every day (daily active users, DAU)monthly active users (MAU). 1.82 billion people use Facebook every day (12% more than a year ago), and 2.74 billion users visit them every month (also 12% more than a year ago).

Although the much higher number of MAUs looks better when boasting about the scale of the website, it also includes users who rarely visit Facebook. DAU tells us much more – if the trend continues, already next year the number of people who visit Facebook every day will exceed 2 billion. And it is active users that are most valuable from the advertisers’ point of view. You can reach them quickly and promote services or products on a regular basis. Companies are able to pay for it and they are doing it more and more.

However, it’s just Facebook. The app family also has huge user bases for Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Together 3.21 billion people already use all websites controlled by Facebook, of which as much as 2.54 billion do it every day.

Unsinkable Facebook?

Data on the number of users and income show that the company is in very good shape, and Facebook is a hen that lays the golden eggs. The high increase in income took place despite the growing controversy and subsequent actions calling for a boycott of the platform.

In February, Elon Musk encouraged the removal of the Facebook account by promoting the slogan #DeleteFacebook. In turn, in the context of the pandemic, there have been accusations that the portal is a threat to public health, and a former Facebook employee accuses the company that it earns on hate. For many companies and websites, criticism on so many fronts would mean an impending collapse, but Facebook seems to be protected by its greatest asset – the scale.

In the US and Canada, where criticism of the portal and boycotting actions are strongest, there has indeed been a decline in active users. According to CNBC, 2% fewer people log into the application every day. However, these are not sharp drops and Mark Zuckerberg does not seem to care too much.

In the current situation, even as Facebook’s criticism continues to escalate, the company will likely be able to compensate for the decline in active users in the US, Canada and the European Union with new users in other regions of the world. However, it is not clear how this will translate into her income. Even though Americans account for a declining share, they still remain among the wealthiest and therefore most attractive for advertisers who are the portal’s primary source of income.

Removing a Facebook account – simple but with consequences

How to delete or deactivate a Facebook account? It requires a few simple steps, described in Years in the short guide, and a 30-day waiting period. We also have a video of how to do this.

However, Facebook tries to discourage users from taking such a radical solution in all possible ways, integrating as many additional services as possible with its website. Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about players who can lose all the games they bought on the Oculus platform if they delete their Facebook account.

We can have similar problems in the case of hundreds of portals and games in which we have chosen the option of logging in through an account on a social network. Some mobile games offer us the choice of account to connect (Google / Facebook) and the achievements and backup will be associated with it. If we delete a Facebook account, it is worth preparing for it and carefully checking where and what data is associated with it.
